The British are famously reserved. Which presents a problem for capturing stories. In fact, one of the reasons why documentaries are still one of the most popular formats is because, in this famously reserved culture, we can't resist looking inside other peoples lives.
This time, in our first episode of a new series looking at what retrofit experts put in their own homes, it's an Anglo Irish family that let us in.
Dogfooding is a term coined across the pond in the US, but it essentially translates to 'taking your own medicine'. So that's what we're uncovering. Poking around in the homes of the people that are making Britain more energy efficient to see how they are doing it.
The Retrofit Assessor At Home
Daniel Murphy is a proud Dad, with a huge heart and a big plan. He wants to transform housing in the South West of England into energy efficient dreams.
We're not talking grand designs blather. We're talking about the sort of home many people could, do and will own.
And to prove the point, he's doing a great job on his old bungalow.
In the space of 3 hours, we met his cracking young son - straight after running club and just before rugby club (yep, he didn't stop) and power lifter wife (the psycho analyst super athlete) whilst getting a tour of a house being subjected to the sort of piece meal improvement programme that we should all aspire to.
This is methodical progress, with incremental gains made in the energy performance of the house, as it plays it's role as a home for Daniels (growing) family - real people living real working lives.
Daniel isn't some sort of tech geek, a knowledge nerd, he is bright no question - but this man has hands hardened from years of working on the tools. Carpenter, builder and by his own admission - 'moderate surfer'. 🏄. Just the right mix of thinking and doing.
The point is, he is a great example of a retrofit aficionado who is actually eating the dog food he's selling. And in a world where actions speak louder than words, Daniel has a roar.
